1806: Gabriel Moraga, a Spaniard trying to locate possible mission sites, was the first European to see the Sutter Buttes which served as a prominent landmark for travelers and settlers in the region
1841: After building Sutter's Fort, John Augustus Sutter established Hock Farm on the land that would later become Yuba City, and was the first large-scale agricultural settlement in Northern California, composed of grain, cattle, orchards, and vineyards
1842: The bulk of the territory was deeded by the Mexican Government to John Sutter
1871: The South Butte post office was established on August 7 at the stage station on Butte House east of the current town
Late 1880's: Sutter City was the result of an attempt to take advantage of the boom in California. The town was located south of the Cemetery along the path of a railroad line projected to pass through the town and it hoped to become the new county seat, because it was near the geographical center of the county. However, the rail line was never built, and it never became the county seat
1888: South Butte changed its name to Sutter City on January 20, 1888, when the post office was moved to the new location
1895: The Sutter City post office name was changed to Sutter
